A Self–Tuning Intelligent Controller for a Smart Actuation Mechanism of a Morphing Wing Based on Shape Memory Alloys

The paper exposes some of the results obtained in a major research project related to design, development, and experimental testing morphing wing demonstrator, with main focus on development automatic control actuation system, its integration into developed gain extension laminar flow over upper surface when it was morphed based this system. multidisciplinary one, being realized collaboration between several Canadian teams coming from universities, institutes, industrial entities. project’s general aim reduce operating costs for new generation aircraft via fuel economy flight also improve performance, expand envelope, replace conventional surfaces, drag range, vibrations flutter. In regard, team theoretical studies, accompanied by wind tunnel rectangular model equipped skin, electrical smart actuators, pressure sensors. designed be actively controlled so as change shape produce expansion surface. mechanism used flexible (manufactured composite materials) is Shape Memory Alloys (SMA) actuators. Shown here are actuate wing’s surface, design intelligent concept, which uses self–tuning fuzzy logic Proportional–Integral–Derivative plus On–Off controller, provided two controllers, one controller other tuning having role adjusting (to tune) coefficients involved operation controller. system took account physical limitations SMA including software protection section wires, implemented using temperature limiter saturating current powering component integrated deactivates or activates heating phase situation actuator passes cooling Self–Tuning Fuzzy Logic Controller.
